Dear Rebecca,

The Horn of Africa food crisis is the worst humanitarian emergency we have seen this century.

When you gave us your generous donation, 11 million people were in desperate need of food and water. ChildFund has delivered life-saving food rations, clean water and vital medicines. But now 13 million are affected.

In response to the desperate need in the region, the Australian government today launched ‘The Horn of Africa Dollar for Dollar Initiative’. This means that every dollar you give ChildFund Australia today will be matched by the Australian government, AusAID. Make another donation and you will provide:

* EMERGENCY FOOD RATIONS
* CLEAN, SAFE DRINKING WATER
* VITAL MEDICINES

Anything you can spare will help save the lives of children. I thank you for the support you have already given and for any additional support you may be able to provide.

With sincerest thanks

Severe drought has sparked food shortages across the Horn of Africa, affecting millions of people and pushing more than 500,000 children to the brink of starvation.

Consecutive failed rainy seasons in the region have led to one of the worst droughts seen in our lifetime, causing crops to wither, livestock to perish and families to go hungry.

Our teams on the ground are reporting a major emergency situation.

In Kenya, malnutrition and mortality rates in some areas have exceeded emergency thresholds. Food prices have doubled and continue to rise. Families are being forced to leave their homes in search of food, pasture and water. Some households are down to less than one meal a day.

In affected parts of Ethiopia, up to 80% of children under five are malnourished. Rural families who rely solely on their annual harvest to survive have no reserves to fall back on and no income to feed their families.

ChildFund is responding to the crisis, which continues to deteriorate, and we urgently need your support.

ChildFund’s Horn of Africa Food Crisis Appeal will focus on providing food, water and medical support to the most vulnerable community groups, including infants and young children, child-headed households and pregnant or breastfeeding mothers.

Please donate now to help prevent further suffering.
